2021-05-04Lithuanian athletes are sending a message to the whole world - they stand for clean sport, with no place for doping. Lithuanian Olympians - sailor Viktorija Andrulytė, athlete Brigita Virbalytė, pentathlete Justinas Kinderis, wrestler Mantas Knystautas, Paralympians - swimmer Edgaras Matakas and athlete Osvaldas Kucavičius - who have all won tickets to the Tokyo Olympics, as well as other renowned athletes and teams from Lithuania, are taking part in the annual "Play True Day" programme.
Since 2014, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the anti-doping community around the world have been celebrating the annual global Play True Day on 9 April, dedicated to clean sport. Athletes around the world are using videos to call for fair play and respect for each other.
"Clean sport for me means achieving the highest possible result by all means that are harmless to the human body in both the short and long term, and giving all athletes a chance to achieve victories through their own efforts and hard work," says sailor V. Andrulytė in the video.
"Play clean, sleep well!", says kayaker Ričardas Nekriošius.
The Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency, which focuses on education and prevention and the direct fight for clean sport through doping control, thanks Lithuanian athletes for their active participation in the World Clean Sport Day.
"We thank the Lithuanian athletes who actively encourage everyone to follow the principles of clean and fair sport. The Anti-Doping Agency's core mission is to ensure fairness and equality among athletes and transparency in a competitive sports environment. We place great emphasis on the prevention of the use of Prohibited Substances and we are pleased that these programmes are also attracting a high level of attention from athletes. The appeal of the Lithuanian representatives will be seen by the whole world sports community", said Rūta Banytė, Head of the Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency.
The Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency was established on 27 July 2005 to ensure smooth operation and implementation of the international conventions ratified by Lithuania.
In 1995, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania ratified the Council of Europe Anti-Doping Convention, thus declaring its position in favour of clean and fair sport. Subsequently, Lithuania strengthened its position in favour of integrity by ratifying the Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe Anti-Doping Convention in 2004. In the same year, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania signed the Copenhagen Declaration on Anti-Doping in Sport, by which Lithuania committed itself to implement the World Anti-Doping Agency Code. In 2006, the Seimas ratified the International Convention against Doping in Sport.
