Last week, participants of the Lithuanian U14 Tennis Championship, held in \u0160iauliai, not only competed for national championship titles but also deepened their knowledge about one of the most pressing issues in modern sport \u2013 the manipulation of sports competitions.
A representative from the Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency, Aleksandras Kovalenka, conducted a seminar on this topic for young tennis players. During the training, athletes were introduced to the phenomenon of match-fixing, its prevalence worldwide, the main risks for athletes, and preventive measures.
The seminar also discussed the most common methods of match manipulation, real-life cases from the world of sport, and the potential consequences of such activities for athletes, coaches, and the entire sports community. The event addressed the importance of fair competition, accountability for violations of sports values, and actions to be taken when encountering suspicious situations.
Match manipulation is currently one of the biggest threats to sporting integrity. This phenomenon is often associated not only with unfair competition but also with other criminal activities such as corruption or the legalisation of illicit funds through sports betting.
All tennis players who participated in the training will receive certificates of completion issued by the Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency.
The training was organised in collaboration with the Lithuanian Tennis Union and the Lithuanian Anti-Doping Agency. Its aim is to raise the awareness of young athletes and help create a transparent, fair, and responsible sporting environment.
